WPP Publication: Achieving Water Security in a Changing Climate
The central Kosovo high plain is home to the majority of the country’s population, industry, and power and agricultural production, but by 2025 this semi-arid region may not be able to supply bulk water to all of these users. To identify ways to improve water management the WPP co-funded a study entitled Water Security for Central Kosovo.
The team applied the Water
Evaluation and Planning System (WEAP) modeling tool to the Ibër river basin and
trained national institutions on how to use WEAP for other basins.
The
report found that climate change will worsen the already declining water supply
and will pose an unprecedented water challenge after 2020. Three priority
investment packages for achieving water security are proposed, including both
infrastructure improvements and institutional strengthening measures to optimize
water management, reduce costs and save water.
Based on the study’s
findings, a $25 million Bank-financed project is under preparation and planned
for approval in 2014. In addition, a concept for a new water resources
management strategy for the Ibër basin was adopted by the Ministry of
Environment and Spatial Planning.
