CBCMed waste management project (MED-3R) present at Francophone Games in Nice
An EU-funded Cross-Border Cooperation waste management project is holding a stand at the Partners’ Village of the Francophone Games taking place in Nice, France from 7 to 15 September 2013. The ‘Euro-Mediterranean strategic platform for a suitable waste management’ (MED-3R) aims by its presence to raise awareness of Mediterranean and international key players about the importance of integrated and sustainable waste management and create contacts with francophone countries participating in the Games.
On the one hand, it will serve to promote the project and raise awareness of Mediterranean and international key players about the importance of integrated and sustainable waste management. On the other, the stand will allow the project to create contacts with the francophone countries participating in the Games, considering that five Mediterranean cities eligible in the ENPI CBC Med Programme should integrate MED-3R at mid-term (2014).

In response to the threats posed by the increase in waste production to the environment and public health, the MED-3R project aims to reinforce the management capacities of local authorities from France, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon and Tunisia with regards to waste collection, disposal and valorisation.
The implementation phase, to last until the end of 2015, foresees different actions in order to enhance the institutional governance of public policies related to waste management such as:
• the definition or improvement of 13 waste management plans in different cities of the Mediterranean area;
• the implementation of 13 pilot projects addressing various types of waste including plastic, organic or hazardous material;
• training of at least 300 public officials and managers, technical agents and staff of NGOs. Thanks to the project, waste production should be reduced by 5% to 10% in the target areas and waste valorization increased by 25%. The total budget of the project is €4,787,062, of which €4,308,385 as CBCMed contribution (90%).
The ENPI CBC Mediterranean Sea Basin Programme 2007/2013 is a multilateral cross-border cooperation programme funded by the European Union under the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument. It aims at reinforcing cooperation between the EU and partner countries' regions located along the shores of the Mediterranean sea.
