Demonstration of wastewater treatment in Tunisian tanneries
-The leather sector is one of the most important economic sectors in
Tunisia. Export to the EU has increased by 10-fold since 1997. However, the
industrial processes involved in leather production have a very negative
impact on the environment due the high quantities of water and chemicals
used. Wastewater treatment technologies are rarely applied in the Tunisian
tanneries.
-In order to comply with environmental legislation, to contribute to
sustainable development of the country, and to improve the competitiveness
of the leather sector, the development and introduction of wastewater
treatment systems are necessary.
-Therefore, there is a need to improve the CNCC’s capacities.

Objectives | The main objective of the project is to promote and improve the use of
wastewater treatment technologies in the tannery industries in
Tunisia. The specific objectives are to: * Study the requirements of CNCC’s laboratory and purchase the necessary equipment for wastewater analysis; * Carry out a comparative study of the current wastewater treatment situation in Tunisia; * Set-up two mobile pilot prototypes for wastewater treatment; * Demonstrate the prototypes in a selected tannery; * Dissemination project results through publications, presentations, and workshops |
