Desertification in the Aral Sea Region : a Study of the Natural and Anthropogenic Impacts.
- The Aral Sea and the surrounding lands suffer from one ot the worst
environmental disasters in recent history. As the lake has shrunk with
increasing diversion of Amu-Darya and Syr-Darya rivers for irrigation,
various types of salts have precipitated on its former bed.
- Most of these salts are subject to wind erosion. The exposed bed of the
Aral has thus become the major source of salt and dust storms in the region.
Salt in the atmosphere provides condensation nuclei and thus has an impact
on world climate - a global concern.
