LOWER EUPHRATES DRAINAGE & IRRIGATION
- To assist Syria in the extension and protection of agricultural area under irrigation in the lower Euphrates valley, the EU provided between 1985 and 1995 grants and special loans of a total amount of € 12 million to the "Lower Euphrates Drainage & Irrigation" scheme.
- This was in support of one of the superior policy objectives of the
Syrian Government since that date in favour of increasing the contribution
of agriculture to economic growth, to food supply security and employment in
order to cater for the needs of a growing population, to mitigate effects of
rural-urban migration and protect soils against effects of drought and
salinity.
- The project formed part of a large-scale irrigation scheme in the lower
part of the Euphrates basin, south of Deir-Ez-Zour, which pursued the
following.

- The EC contribution to the project aimed at a specific support in favour of the use of local manpower and construction materials in the implementation of the scheme and in an increase of the local value added content of its works. This was in complementation of a previous support in favour of technical assistance for feasibility studies, design and engineering of the whole programme, for which a € 2.4 million grant had been provided under the 1st Protocol of Cooperation during 1980-85.
