COMSTECH Consultative Meeting: Water-Energy-Food Nexus, Islamabad (Pakistan), 1-2 December 2014

The OIC Summit on S&T will Insha’Allah be held on 9th April, 2015, where Heads of States and their respective Ministers of Sciences and Technology of OIC member countries will participate.

To benefit from this event, and to sensitize the political leadership in matters related to S&T, COMSTECH is organizing Strategy Planning Sessions in key areas of Science and Technology by inviting eminent persons in their fields of Specialization.

The meeting on Food, Agriculture, and Water Sector will be held from 01-02 December, 2014. The core objective of the session is to discuss and finalize focused proposals for the Summit which will enhance the collective capabilities of the OIC Member States in research, education and economic application in this important area.

Major themes include the following:

1. Highlight Emerging Areas in Food, Agriculture and Water, with Emphasis on Multi-discipline Research (GIS, computer modeling, environment, etc).

2. Identify Nodes of Excellence in Food Security and Water Sector in OIC Countries and methods to improve linkages through the concept of Mother Institutes in order to build collective competence and ‘Transfer’ of knowledge.

3. Propose improvements in education content and methodology, and laboratory equipment for various levels of education, particularly pre-university education.

4. Examine the role of Computation and Modeling in this sector.

5. To establish a Research Fund for supporting Innovation in Food, Agriculture and Water in OIC Member States, this will provide research grants, equipment maintenance, and training in emerging areas. This should have clear Funding Mechanisms/Processes/Procedures, and identification of KPIs for gauging the Performance of the Fund.

A number of distinguished panelists will gather to discuss these and related matters in order to finalize the strategy, and then prepare a working paper for presentation in the OIC Summit on S&T.
